about

In 1974, the Young People of Temple Shaari Emeth, Englishtown, New Jersey recorded and released a very limited vinyl record entitled "Sing Out - it's Shabbos --- A folk rock sabbath celebration."

In 2009 the idea for Sabbapath was conceived when musician Rob Markoff was browsing for records and randomly came across "Sing Out." He was blown away by the images on the cover of the record, and exuberance of the Sabbath ceremony that he heard. He gathered his good friends and musical collaborators, Kevin Kajetzke and James Botha. The three recorded a new Sabbath ceremony- creating new melodies, incorporating traditional melodies, and, most importantly, mixing in the sounds and voices of the young people from 1974 into their songs.

In 2011, JDub Records released the Sabbapath album. According to Jason Diamond at Jewcy.com: "Drawing from traditional Jewish songs, as well as mystical folk music of the 60′s and 70′s, Sabbapath features spirited singing, droning voices, flutes, harmoniums, strum sticks, and autoharp. Think John Fahey and Incredible String Band with some Shlomo Carlebach for good measure, and you’ve got an idea of what you’re in store for".

In early 2014, Carrie Pekor Jasper, a member of the youth group from 1974, and her father Allan Pekor, the leader of the youth group, learned that their project resurfaced many years later on the Sabbapath album.

In August 2014, Sabbapath and the "Young People of Temple Shaari Emeth" will unite in Englishtown, New Jersey for a sabbath celebration together!

In anticipation of the August reunion, the Sabbapath album is now available on Bandcamp. Unfortunately, Sing Out is not available on Bandcamp, but a couple of songs can be heard on the website of Professor Ari Kelman of Stanford University (web.stanford.edu/group/edjs/cgi-bin/wordpress/2013/02/19/the-sounds-of-young-jewish-new-jersey-ca-197273/).
